I use the following grading standards.
Gem – Four visually equal large margins and outstanding eye appeal. A “boxed” stamp.
Superb – Extremely well centered with reasonably large margins. At first glance this stamp appears to be perfectly centered. Close examination required to detect shift.
Extra Fine/ Superb- Very well centered with at least normal sized margins that may be a touch off in one direction. Or top and bottom will not equal left and right.
Extra fine- A well centered stamp that is a bit off in one or more directions.
Very Fine/Extra Fine- Margins are clearly not equal but they are ample and visually appealing.
Fine Very Fine- Clearly off center on one or more sides. The design remains clear of the perfs but the margin is narrow.
Fine- The edge of the design is approaching the perfs on one side but the design is visibly clear.
Very Good- The perfs touch or very slightly cut into the frameline of the design on one side.
Good- The perforations cut well into the design on one or two sides and some portion of the design is lost.
